BUCHANAN - In Lakeland Conference softball action, Buchanan picked up another pair of league wins by setting down Cassopolis Monday evening on the Lady Bucks home field.
Ashley Pointer gained the wins in both contests, improving her record to 5-1, while the team improves to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Lakeland Conference.
Buchanan took the first game 9-0 with Emily Ross and Jayme O'Bryant each stroking a pair of singles and Maggie Ernsberger rapping a double and a single to lead the Lady Bucks 10 hit attack.
"Tonight we started out slow. Once we get our small game going, it catches us on fire. I'll tell you, I wouldn't want to coach against us," Welsh said.
Pointer gave up only one hit and struck out seven in the opener and walked two. Symone Pompey was tagged with the loss, giving up 10 hits and walking three. Pompey struck out five Buchanan hitters.
In the nightcap, Buchanan scored two runs in the sixth to take a 13-3 win. Pointer gave up six hits and struck out seven.
Ross, Jill Woodrick and Holly Lucas each had three hits in the second game. Samantha Vlasiak had a pair of singles to lead Cass and Becky File picked up a double.
Kayla Green gave up nine hits and eight runs to pick up the loss for the Rangers.
"I really like this team, they are fun to watch, great to coach and there are a lot of good athletes here and we're pretty doggone young," Welsh said.
According to Welsh, murderer's row is coming up. In the next week and a half, the Lady Bucks will face Niles on Wednesday, Watervliet on Friday, South Haven on Monday, Brandywine next Wednesday, and Coloma next Friday.
"We're going to find out how good we are the next week and a half. But that's the kind of teams you want to play," Welsh said.
