CASSOPOLIS - Chairman of the Capt. Samuel Felt Good Citizens, Sarah Essex, announced to the chapter last Monday, that Kaitlyn Smous of Edwardsburg won its award for the annual essay contest.
Three non-DAR judges read the essays from the six area high school Good Citizens who participated in the contest and made their selection. Kaitlyn shared her essay with the chapter and guests.
Students were required to write on “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility For Preserving It.”
These essays are written under school supervision, without aids, without editing and in pen and ink.
The essay is limited to 500 words or less.
In her essay she emphasized, “We must enforce justice, preserve equality and emphasize patriotism.”
Kaitlyn received from Mrs. Essex a $100 check and applause and congratulations from the chapter.
Also applauding and smiling were Kaitlyn's father, mother, brother, sister and the very proud Edwardsburg High School Principal David Zech.
Kaitlyn must decide by May 1 whether she will attend the University of Michigan or University of Cincinnati in the fall. She wants to be an architect and worked in the summer of 2005 for Architects Inc. Mrs. Essex, on behalf of the chapter, wished her continued good luck and success.
