LANSING - The Michigan Department of State has given four communities in Berrien County a total of $7,466.63 as reimbursement for efforts to verify the accuracy of registered voter lists. The funds are part of federal allocations to the state via the Help America Vote Act.
The City of Niles received $3,691.23 and the Township of Buchanan, $149.50.
These funds cover the costs that the communities incurred in sending out new Voter ID cards to registered voters. When the cards come back as undeliverable, then clerks can begin the process of removing the obsolete records from the Qualified Voter File, making the entire elections process more efficient and accurate.
