Upset falls short for Vikings

NILES - Niles' varsity volleyball team was hoping to upset undefeated Coloma Monday evening as the Vikings hosted the Comets for a non-conference game.
Though Niles did take a 25-16 win in the second game, Coloma went on to claim the victory, winning the first match, 25-18, the third match 28-26 and the fourth, 25-22.
Despite a loss, Niles played very well on offense and defense and gave Coloma one of its closest games of the season,
Buchanan's the only other team to go past three games with the Comets, who are now 9-0 overall.
Niles now stands at 10-9-4.
Statistically for the Vikes, Karly Kennedy had nine kills, two aces and 10 digs. Katie Bourbainnas had five kills, one block, one ace and three digs.
Kaylynn Stephenson had one kill, one ace and eight digs. Maddy Peterek had one kill, 22 assists, one ace and five digs. Sam Brawley had 22 digs. Britney Passig had three kills, one block and four digs and Kylee Mudd had five kills and 14 digs.
Niles is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Lakeshore for a Big 16 match-up.
Dowagiac vs. St. Joseph
ST. JOSEPH - The Dowagiac varsity volleyball team went 0-3 Monday night at the St. Joe Quad.
The Chieftains were defeated by the host Lady Bears in the opening round, 10-25 and 19-25.
Dowagiac lost in three games to Zeeland West High School in the second round, 25-22, 14-21 and 8-15.
In the third round, South Haven handed the Chieftains a 21-25 and 17-25 setback.
