NILES - Once again this year, the Four Flags Garden Club did their magic at the Niles Historic Depot. For 14 years, club members have been decorating both inside and out. This all began back in 1991, when the last scene of the John Candy movie “Only the Lonely” was filmed at the depot. The movie studio placed lights on the roof to create a holiday scene. When they were finished filming, they left the lights, so the club organized and created “Hometown Christmas.”
The depot is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. The interior decorations are a sight to behold, including the 14 foot Blue Spruce tree donated by Durm Farms and decorated with ornaments made by club members. Topiaries and live greens adorn the windows. The roofline lights are on from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. If you are looking for one of those special holiday “things to do,” be sure to make the Niles Amtrak Depot one of your stops.
