NILES - Passing recipes from one generation in a family to the next is a great tradition families can share together.
With one million associates from all around the country, Wal-Mart is the perfect representation of the various cultures with our nation's communities.
With this in mind, associates from all of Wal-Mart's stores were invited to share their treasured recipes as Tryfoods International and Wal-Mart were seeking to come up with the ultimate collection of delicious, family-tested recipes for a cookbook.
Beverly Garza Robertson of Niles had her Pumpkin Roll recipe chosen from thousands of recipe entries to featured in the cookbook.
The book features everything from appetizers and soups to main dishes, kid favorites and delectable desserts.
Robertson, who has worked at Wal-Mart for a year and a half, entered the Pumpkin Roll recipe because she knew it was a favorite of a lot of people. She has made up to 10 at a time.
Robertson said she was a little shocked when the contest officials from Florida called to tell her she had won and to go over her recipe to make sure it was correct.
When Robertson isn't working at Wal-Mart in the deli department she enjoys volunteering in the community to help those who are in need.
Garza then decided she would like to go back to work and she came to Wal-Mart.
Robertson carries her love of helping others as every few weeks she bakes items for the Wal-Mart associates to purchase in the break room, with all the proceeds going to the Children's Miracle Network.
The winning recipes are published in six regional editions of the Wal-Mart Family Cookbook, each of them reflecting the flavors and favorites of local communities. Each cookbook features 80 recipes, some of which have been in families for generations and others which have recently been created and are budget-conscious and easy to prepare.
The Wal-Mart Family Cookbook is currently available at Wal-Mart stores around the country.
