NILES - It's that time of year again! The 2005 Greater Niles Area Golf Tournament, also known as the City Tournament, will be held July 8-10 at Plym Park Golf Course.
The Junior Tournament will kick off the golf-filled weekend beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 8.
There are three age groups in the juniors division and all will golf a different number of holes.
The 15-17 year-olds will golf the full 18 holes, 9-14 year-olds will golf nine holes and anyone younger will golf seven holes.
There is a $10 sign-up fee which includes golf, food and drinks.
The Mens and Ladies Tournament will be held Saturday, July 9 and Sunday July 10 at 10 a.m.
There is a $20 sign-up fee, plus green and cart fees (if desired).
There will be a seperate Mens and Ladies Tournament with a Championship Flight, A, B and C Flights as well as Senior Flights.
These same people include Tracy Brewington, Chuck Brooks, Dick Noble, Bill Anders, Tim Pingel, Mike Brown and many, many more.
While the Adult Tournament is popular, it is still lacking a bit in one particular area.
The tournament has been a part of Niles for….well, nobody really seems to know. Tournament winners date back to 1957, but both Brooks and Brewington said they think it's been longer than that.
"It used to be a really big deal. We had the radio station (WNIL) come out and broadcast, newspapers would come, but now none of that happens anymore. It's still very popular with the golfers, but not so much the media or the community and I'd like to see it go back to that," Brewington added.
The tournament is open to all area residents in Southwest Lower Michigan. Golfers from Indiana are not allowed, though they have had a lot of people from across the border call.
Prizes this year will be a jacket for first place winners along with their name on a plaque and golf balls for others.
Sign-up deadline for all divisions is Thursday, July 7. For more information on these tournaments, please contact Judie or Chuck Brooks at Plym Park Golf Course, 684-7331.
