NILES - When driving down Main Street through downtown Niles residents, as well as people passing through the community, are likely to notice the beautiful plants and trees that were added to the area during the streetscape project.
But many residents may not know who takes care of the plants which give an added touch of beauty to the downtown district.
An interesting aspect to the maintenance of the downtown streetscape is when the planters were installed they were equipped with their own irrigation system.
This includes the hanging baskets on the lamp posts, which would be quite difficult to water without the help of the irrigation system.
The system is set on a timer and the baskets are watered at a specific time each day, surprising those who drive past and see the spray.
The Niles local business, God's Green Earth, who helped a great deal with the project, will be responsible for the maintenance of the planters.
Croteau added the group would greatfully accept help from any individual, company or organization in the Niles area that would like to help by taking a week to do all the maintenance on these plants.
