Well we are wrapping up the spring sports season for 2005.
Most teams have only a game or two left in regular season play, while others are patiently awaiting the start of the district tournaments.
A big congratulations to the Niles High School boys track team for their outstanding performance at the regional competition last week and for earning the Big 16 West Division title.
The team also took third this week at the Big 16 Conference Track &Field Championship where the Vikes competed against 11 Class A schools and blew by all but three.
Today, the team is competing at the team state championships where only teams that won regionals were invited.
If the team comes home with a win, Niles will make history.
On the other side of town, Michelle Smith was the only Brandywine track member to receive a regional win.
Smith captured the Division 3 pole vault regional championship last week at Constantine High School.
Smith cleared 8-feet-3 to edge Edwardsburg's Linda Phillipson and Constantine's Stevie Bowen, who tied for second with a height of 7-9.
Although Niles' girls track team didn't make it to regionals, Nicole Horvath set a new school record for the Lady Vikes.
Horvath, who took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.37, set the school record in the pole vault when she cleared 8-feet. The old record of 7-9 was held by Erin Miller.
Ashley Austin was the only other member to place for Niles when she took sixth with a toss of 34-feet.
Congratulations on a great season of sports and good luck to all athletes who will be competing in district play starting next week.
