NILES - It's official: Niles Township Police Chief John Street will be retiring from the force effective July 29.
Street had this to say in a statement to the media.
Street would make no further comment on the matter. He only responded with the written statement to the media.
Tonkin added that they have named Jeff Dunlop as the interim Niles Township police chief.
At the meeting on Monday evening the Niles Township board will be talking to the public about the future of the department and is looking for the public to comment about what they hear.
Tonkin said though negotations are "not in the final stages," as has been rumored, the township has received an updated quote from the Berrien County Sheriff's Department as to what it would cost for them to take over the policing services of the township.
Tonkin added with the budget cuts from the state, the police department has suffered the most.
