NILES - As National Teacher Appreciation Week draws to a close, Niles residents remembered their favorite teachers.
Dunning added that he also helped her to gain the study skills she needed to help her succeed in college. He taught her that she can reach any goal she sets for herself if she just works hard at it, she added.
Jackson added that even though Grimes has no children of her own, when you were in her class she was like your teaching mother.
Carol Schmidt of Niles said, "My favorite teacher was my fifth grade teacher Nola Kehrer. She was a wonderful lady who really treated everyone fairly and she just really cared about her students."
Schmidt remembers that when she had the mumps Kehrer sent her a get well card and that really made her feel better.
Joan Schmidt's favorite teachers were Peg Parrot and Joyce Schwallen. "They both took an interest in me and encouraged me to continue my education. They made me want to have a career in teaching," Schmidt said.
She did go on to become a teacher.
