Niles takes home first place trophy from New Buffalo tournament

NEW BUFFALO - Revenge!
The Niles varsity volleyball team gained a measure of revenge Saturday afternoon as it defeated Dowagiac in the finals of the New Buffalo Invitational.
The Lady Vikings, who lost to Dowagiac two weeks ago in a Big 16 Conference West Division match, knocked off the Chieftains in the title match of the rescheduled tournament, 25-6 and 25-12.
The Vikings split with Eau Claire in the first game 25-8, 15-25 and split with Dowagiac 26-24, 20-25.
They beat Watervaliet Grace Christian 25-16, 25-11 and New Buffalo 25-23, 25-23.
Niles finished first in pool play while the Chieftains were second, Eau Claire third, Michigan Lutheran fourth, New Buffalo fifth and Watervliet Grace Christian sixth.
Niles was defeated by Michigan Lutheran 23-25, 20-25.
Amber Peters led the Vikings with 78 assists, 39 points, 28 digs, seven aces and three kills. Karly Kennedy had 26 digs, 25 points, 16 aces and 10 kills. Claire Molnar had 36 digs, 18 points, 12 kills and five aces for Niles.
Dagmar Hoffman had 15 kills, eight points, seven blocks, two ces and one dig. Ashley Pingl had 41 digs, 27 points and five aces. Kaylee Bonner had 33 points, 32 digs and seven aces.
Sam Brawley gave the Vikes 17 digs, eight points and one ace. Melissa Oleson had 35 kills and six blocks. Brittany Passig had 11 kills, four blocks and Meghan Flynn had five kills for Niles.
Kim Luthringer had 24 kills, 22 digs and two aces for Dowagiac. Ashely Urbanski had 53 assists, 13 kills and nine aces.
Brittney Reist had 44 blocks, 16 kills for the Chiefs. Lindsay Tyler had 24 digs, seven aces. Jill Billingham had 18 kills and six aces and Brittany Bruens had 38 assists for Dowagiac.
Niles will travel to Three Oaks tonight for a non-conference match-up. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
BRONSON - "It was not a good day," Brandywine coach Gary Whitney said of his volleyball team at the Bronson Invitational Saturday.
The Bobcats, who are use to winning tournaments, only won two matches out of five played.
The Bobcats lost to Monroe Jefferson 16-25, 25-22, 11-15. They lost to Carleton Airport 23-25, 17-25 and to Hillsdale 17-25, 18-25.
Brandywine beat Climax Scotts 25-18, 25-15 and Edwardsburg 25-17, 25-19.
Emily Whitney had 80 assists, 12 blocks and three aces for the Bobcats. Kaite Tuohy had 23 kills, 11 blocks and six kills. Nikki Cooper had 32 kills and 30 digs.
Kendra Zache had 25 kills and three aces. Ashley Antus had 29 digs and Kelly Zache had 28 digs for Brandywine.
The Bobcats travel to Dowagiac for a non-conference match up. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
