NILES - The United Way of Greater Niles announced today that a Special Grant of $1,000 has been awarded to St. Mary's Christian Service Organization (CSO) in memory of Sister Mary Dolora Geraghty.
The grant will be used by the social service agency to provide emergency assistance. Pat Saxton a volunteer and acting director of St. Mary's CSO said the cash award "will help serve the needy of the Niles area assisting with food, utility bill payments and prescription funding."
Sister Mary Dolora who died in October organized the service organization in 1979, and for 25 years worked almost every day to help those in need. Executive director John Stauffer said "we are pleased to be able to offer support for the neediest among us and to recognize Sister Mary Dolora's contribution to the community."
The 2004-05 fund-raising campaign for the United Way is continuing and is still short of the $280,000 goal.
Those wishing to make a pledge are urged to contact the United Way office or visit the website at www.unitedewayniles.com. No amount is too small since gifts are combined with those from others and have a substantial local impact.
