For guiding her team to some of the best basketball its played all season, Brandywine point guard Kalie Newman is the Niles Daily Star's Athlete of the Week for Nov. 7-13.
Newman led her team to two straight victories last week, as the Bobcats finished the regular season winning four of six games.
The junior led Brandywine with 16 points in a victory over River Valley Nov. 10. She was a driving force in the Bobcats early run to grab a 10-point led. She scored seven of her points in the first quarter.
One night later, against bitter rival Buchanan, Newman helped guide the Bobcats to their biggest win of the year, a 31-point triumph over the Bucks. She only scored nine points in the game, but Brandywine's leading scorer only had ten in a ballanced effort.
Against Buchanan, Newman again was a catalyst early, getting five points in the first period and setting up her teammates on numerous assists.
Each week, the athletics directors from Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan nominate players for the Athlete of the Week.
The sports editor of the Niles Daily Star then selects a boys' and girls' winner for each week.
Each senior winner will be eligible to apply for the scholarship at the end of the school year. Each week's winners will also receive a month's subscription to the newspaper of the community they represent.
In April, each senior Athlete of the Week winner from all three sports seasons will submit an application for the scholarship.
Leader Publications will then select a boys' and girls' Athlete of the Year from either Niles, Brandywine or Buchanan.
The two athletes will receive a scholarship for an as yet to be determined amount. The winners will be named in May.
