Buchanan head coach Bill Weaver knew he had a tough challenge on his hands Thursday night against Bridgeman. He was proved right by a 60-33 loss to the Bees.
Bridgeman nailed a 3-pointer with no hesitation to start the game at Buchanan. Although the Bees had the lead all of the first quarter, Buchanan stayed right with them only giving up a few baskets halfway through the first. DeeDee Thompson made a 2-point buzzer shot ending the first quarter with Bridgeman up 16-8.
Buchanan stayed within a close reach of Bridgeman throughout the second quarter. Bridgeman had a 12 point lead going into the half 24-12.
The third quarter proved to be just as tough as both teams were fighting to take a good lead. It seemed that Buchanan was going to stay scoreless in the third, but DeeDee Thompson scored Buchanan's first two points of the half 4:37 into the third.
Sheena Bradshaw hit her first 3-pointer of the night 2:00 into the third and hit her second with 39 seconds left in the quarter. It still wasn't enough to give Buchanan the lead as they ended the quarter down 22-40.
In the fourth, Bridgeman proved that they came to Bucktown to win a ball game. The Bees scored eight points within the first three minutes of the quarter giving them a big lead and never letting Buchanan get any closer. Bridgeman nailed shot after shot and only allowed Buchanan a couple of baskets.
Buchanan was down by more than 25 points toward the end of the game, but they still played hard, Weaver said.
DeeDee Thompson made two free throws with 1:52 left. Holly Dunivan made Buchanan's last basket of the night with 12 seconds remaining, but Bridgeman walked away with a 60-33 win.
Bridgemans Heather Seyfred had 30 points for the Bees.
Although the varsity team lost, Buchanan's JV team upset Bridgeman with a 45-43 victory. Kamila Svobodva walked away with 18 points for the Bucks. Lindsey Borr added nine and Emily Ross and Connie Bradshaw both had eight for Buchanan.
The Bucks travel to Edwardsburg next Tuesday.
