Inconsistency from between rounds hurt Niles at Tuesday's SMAC meet. Five of six Vikings shot in the 90s, leading to a 12th place finish for Niles at the 36-hole tournament at Thorn Apple Creek in Kalamazoo.
Ben Landgraf led the team with a 78 on two rounds of 39. D.J. Wolnick, Jeff Jurgonski and Alex Welch all started well, shooting first-round 43s, but each saw his score rise in the second round.
Chris Haas and Scott Majerek started slowly with first-round 51, but improved in the second round, shooting 41 and 44, respectively.
Niles' team score of 350 placed them third in the Big16 West Division. Lakeshore and St. Joseph each shot 332, tying them for ninth overall and first in the West.
Mattawan won the tournament with a 310. First, second and third places were all from the East division.
Gunder said his young team is still learning. He said the Vikings mainly need to work on the mental aspect of the game.
Gunder said his team is already gearing up for Monday's SMAC meet, which Niles hosts.
