Monday's SMAC golf meet at Blossomtrails Golf Club in Benton Harbor proved to Niles' coach Greg Gunder that he can never be sure what to expect from his team.
Niles finished second with a score of 162, three strokes behind Lakeshore, but it was the way the Vikings got that score that surprised Gunder.
The Vikings' lowest score was from D.J. Wolnick, a freshman whose score has counted toward the team total few times this season. Wolnick shot a 38, three-over-par, just two strokes behind the top score of 36.
Niles' worst score came from a junior, Scott Majerek, who has been one of the team's leaders all year.
Dowagiac's David Maxey and Lakeshore's C.J. Wright tied for medalist honors, each shooting a 36.
Gunder said, while Niles' team score remains consistent, the four golfers whose rounds count toward that total has varied this season.
By taking first place, Lakeshore gained two points on Niles in the division standings. The Vikings lead dropped from four points to two on Monday.
The next division meet is in two weeks and will be played at Orchard Hills, Niles' home course.
