Niles’ girls finish last, boys take ninth at Viking Stampede

Concordia captured both the boys' and girls' team championships Saturday at the Viking Stampede hosted by Niles and held at Southwestern Michigan College.
The Concordia girls team posted a team total of 53 to easily outdistance runner up Portage Northern which finished with 95 points.
Marshall finished third with 107 points, while Mishawaka, Ind. was fourth and Portage Central fifth with 125 and 150 points respectively.
Niles was led by Samantha Brawley who was 32nd with a time of 23:04.
Meghan Flynn was 83rd with a time 29:14. Heather Antos was 89th with a time of 30:58, while Tami Madison was 90th with a time of 31:10.
Also finishing for the Lady Vikings were Amanda Smith (91st), Angel Brown (92nd) and Chelsey Clark (98th).
Dowagiac finished next to last with 378 points and Niles last with 385 points.
Concordia's Adele Mitchell was the first girl across the finish line with a time of 18:39.5. Jenna Matthews of Otsego finished second with a time of 19:46.8, while Anna Weber of Michigan City, Ind. was third with a clocking of 19:47.5
Portage Northern's Tina Walter finished fourth in 20:26.3. Sarah Neubacher of Concordia rounded out the top five finishers with a time of 20:34.5
Kara Koereffier of Concordia was sixth (20:39.3), Abby Woodard of Marshall was seventh (21:03.4), Kaitlin Boester of Fort Wayne, Ind. Northrop was eighth (21:11.4), Callie Flack of Portage Northern ninth (21:16.1) and Chelsea Thompson of Portage Northern 10th (21:18.2).
Dowagiac was led by Amanda VanHusan who finished 47th with a time of 24:11.
Lori Key finished 78th with a time of 28:07, while Katie Hewitt was 80th with a time of 28:49. Jill Billingham, Kayla Saviano and Ashley Willis placed 86th, 87th and 93rd respectively.
Concordia's boys team edged Northrop by a point to win the team title.
Concordia scored 64 points with Northrop scoring 65. Portage Northern finished third with 96 points and Michigan City 140 to finished fourth. Fifth went to Mattawan with 158 points.
Niles finished ninth with 225 points, while Dowagiac finishing 15th with 413 points.
Northrop's Bobby Moldova was the overall winner with a time of 16:32.9.
Nick Tecca of Parchment was second with a time of 16:56.4, while Brandon Ward of Michigan City, Ind. was third with a clocking of 16:56.9.
The top five was rounded out by Andrew Lowrick of Lakeshore in fourth with a time of 16:59.2 and Zach King of Portage Northern in fifth with a time of 17:01.6
Kyle Schmidt of Concordia was sixth (17:14.2), Nick Dillman of Marshall was seventh (17:17.5), Brandon Jones of Concordia was eighth (17:20.3), Logan Todd of Niles was ninth (17:23.1) and Sam Bird of Northrop was 10th (17:27.7).
Dowagiac's top finisher was Jason Tabbert, who was 43rd with a time of 18:53.
Mike Kasper finished 85th with a time of 20:49. Jeromy Northrop was 90th with a time of 20:59, while Clay Hewitt was 96th with a time of 21:31.
Also finishing for the Chieftains were Evan Bressler (99th), Kevin Billingham (104th) and Tony Saviano (105th).
Besides Todd's finish, the Vikings got a 32nd place finish out of Austin Neilson, with a time of 18:25, a 58th place finish out of Dan Gieger, with a time of 19:24 and a 59th place finish out of Andy Karsten, with a time of 19:25.
Nick Shuck and Steven Withnow placed 67th and 115th respectively.
