Galien crash claims life of sisters, 18 and 15; another seriously injured

NILES -- On Monday, a fatal traffic crash occurred at the US-12/Cleveland Road intersection in Galien at about 12:19 p.m.
A Westbound semi truck, driven by Calvin Cheney, 43, of Niles, collided with a southbound Dodge Shadow driven by Misty Brant, 18, of Buchanan.
Witnesses near the scene advised the car driven by Brant had entered the intersection and was struck by the sestbound semi.
Misty Brant and a backseat passenger, Laura Brant, 15, also of Buchanan, died at the scene as a result of their injuries.
A third occupant of the car, Jason Lange, 30, of Buchanan, sustained serious injuries and was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment. Lange's current condition is unknown.
The driver of the semi, Cheney, was not injured in the crash.
The crash occurred minutes prior to a heavy thunderstorm which moved through the area. Weather does not appear to have been factor in the crash. The accident currently remains under investigation.

Berrien County Sheriff's Department, MIchigan State Police, Three Oaks Police, Galien Fire, Bertrand Fire, SMCAS and Three Oaks Ambulance all responded to the scene of the accident.
