DOWAGIAC -- The Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees adopted a resolution urging area legislators to oppose additional cuts to community college funding.
In addition, the board accepted gifts and grants totaling $809,057, approved the college's new health insurance program, approved appointments to the SMC Foundation, opened bids for a storage area of network hardware and conducted other business at its June meeting Tuesday evening on the Dowagiac campus.
Trustees passed a resolution urging local state legislators to oppose and vote against any further cuts to community college funding.
SMC Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Fred L. Mathews said, "Southwestern Michigan College has endured almost $1 million of cuts in state support since Michigan's budget crisis began. This amounts to a 13.5 percent reduction in annual state aid. At SMC we expected to share in the state cuts, but further reduction to SMC would be unfair and unjustified. We expect our local elected officials in Lansing to fight for their local community colleges."
