The Niles varsity softball team put up big numbers, good and bad, in the first game of a sweep of non-conference foe Berrien Springs Wednesday evening.
The Vikings, now 4-1, outscored the Shamrocks 9-7 while tallying 11 hits and committing seven errors in the opener. Niles won the second game 9-5 and managed eight more hits while committing two errors in the second game.
The Vikings' offense covered up a lot of the mistakes as Lindsay Carey led the way with three singles. Stephanee Schrader added two hits, including a double and Julie Kater also had two hits. Kayla Gross, Ashton Parks, Kate Whittaker and Kari Eckstein each recorded a single.
Eckstein earned the victory in the first game, striking out six and allowing two hits.
Lauryn Gibson and Kater each hit two singles in the second game as Kater earned the pitching victory. Kayla Gross and Stephanee Schrader each added a double.
Niles travels to Benton Harbor today.
