CASSOPOLIS -- Due to the increasing need for help for children who have witnessed domestic violence in their homes, the Domestic Assault Shelter Coalition (DASC) is offering a new program.
The Learning Club (TLC) is a 10-session support and education group for 6 to 12-year-olds offered Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Nancy Petty, Cassopolis Schools social worker, and Carrie Bobenhausen, counselor at Kincheloe and Sister Lakes elementary schools, will facilitate TLC sessions. Ken Jordan, counselor at Patrick Hamilton Middle School in Dowagiac, is coordinating the TLC program for DASC in Cass County.
Children who have witnessed violence in their homes need to be listened to and believed. Other goals of The Learning Club are to increase children's coping skills and knowledge around domestic violence issues, let them know they are not alone, provide a safe place to express their feelings, develop individualized safety plans and have fun.
DASC welcomes referrals from parents who would like their children to participate in The Learning Club. Call DASC at 269-273-6151 for more information, including dates, times and locations.
To contact DASC, call 1-800-828-2023 seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
