Veteran Dowagiac bats overpower young Buchanan pitchers

BUCHANAN -- Visiting Dowagiac was too much for a young Buchanan varsity softball team Friday afternoon.
The Chieftains (8-1) defeated the host Lady Bucks, 7-1 and 12-1.
In the first game Dowagiac banged out 14 hits while holding Buchanan to four hits.
Leslie Niemier had a double to lead Buchanan offensively. Dowagiac got doubles from Kim Luthringer, Brianne Reist, Lindsay Tyler and Brittany Winters. Reist also tripled, as did Sarah Luthringer.
Ashley Pointer took the loss for the Lady Bucks. Brittney Reist picked up the win for Dowagiac as she fanned eight.
In the nightcap Brittney Reist and freshman Holly Lowe combined for a no-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Mandy Parish homered for Dowagiac, while Kim Luthringer, Sarah Luthringer, Tyler and Winters all doubled.
