CASSOPOLIS -- It's been a long, cold winter.
Now it's time to celebrate spring by visiting Dr. T.K. Lawless Park and to help the environment by planting trees on your property.
Cass County Conservation District will hold its annual tree and shrub sale Saturday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to noon at Lawless Park, southeast of Vandalia.
To get there, take M-60 to Lewis Lake Road and head south, then proceed to Monkey Run Street and turn left.
An assortment of seedlings will be available for purchase that morning.
Tree varieties include red cedar, white cedar, red pine, red maple, tulip poplar, eastern redbud, black walnut, red oak, white oak and black walnut.
Available shrubs include Sargent crabapple, American plum, elderberry, high bush cranberry, gray dogwood, red osier dogwood, common lilac, winterberry, nine bark and pussy willow.
Planting trees and shrubs add to the beauty of the landscape and also serve an important role providing food and shelter for wildlife, soil protection and additional environmental benefits.
To get the morning off to a great start, the Cass County Sheriff's Office Mounted Division will have doughnuts, coffee and juice available for purchase.
