CASSOPOLIS -- At a special meeting last Thursday, the Cassopolis Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to expel two male students from Ross Beatty Jr./Sr. High School.
Tracy Hertsel, acting superintendent said there was good evidence that the two were responsible for racially motivated writing which was written on a table in pencil.
A previous day the teacher had cleaned off other writing and continued the watch which was instituted back in the beginning of the year, when other writing of a racial nature was found on a bathroom wall.
The teacher was able to track down the 15 and 16 year old students after more writing in pencil appear on the same table.
The students were not named for the previous writing in the bathroom.
The high school has restricted bathroom passes and the use of hallways, along with having the staff monitoring student activity to a higher degree.
The punishment of the two, who each are reported to have had more than five disciplinary referrals this school year alone, is they are not allowed to return to school or attend any school events for the remainder of the 2003-2004 school year.
The meeting was in closed session and the two students names were not released.
