Search for new drain commissioner

CASSOPOLIS -- The statutory Committee for the Appointment of the Cass County Drain Commissioner met this week.
The committee consists of Probate Judge Susan L. Dobrich, County Clerk-Register Ann L. Simmons and Prosecuting Attorney Victor A. Fitz.
The committee discussed the appointment process for naming a successor to Drain Commissioner Alan Butchbaker, who retired after 15 years in the office.
The committee announced Friday that letters of intent to seek appointment as Cass County drain commissioner shall be submitted to the Cass County clerk no later than Jan. 31, 2004, at 4 p.m.
All interested individuals shall submit a letter of intent, resume with qualifications and an outline of long- and short-term goals for the drain commissioner position to Simmons no later than the date and time set forth above.
The committee will then begin the process of selection of the new drain commissioner after the cut-off date of Jan 31, 2004.
Qualifications for drain commissioner are set forth by statute.
The drain commissioner must be a person who is a registered and qualified elector of Cass County, and that the person has not been convicted of disribution or possession of a civil service exam, a one-year felony, in the last 20 years (MCLA 168.191; MSA 65.1191).
The committee also recommends that the individual applying have a background in civil engineering, accounting or assessing.
The Cass County Board of Commissioners established the drain commissioner's salary at $22,000 per year.
The position includes all other county benefits.
