The German Club completed its annual community service project on Wednesday afternoon at Niles High School when they donated $1,000 to South Bend, Ind.'s Hope Rescue Mission.
The Hope Rescue Mission has been serving needy people since 1954 by providing a place of refuge, meals, temporary shelter, and the help necessary to get back on their feet.
The German Club has been performing community service projects for over 10 years and seeks to improve their donations each year.
To raise money, the group uses donations and fundraisers such as candy sales and car washes.
Schueneman, who has been a part of the club since her sophomore year, said that this year's donation was raised primarily through candy sales, which began at the beginning of the school year.
This is not the only time this year that the club has aided the Hope Rescue Mission.
On a Saturday night in late September the club volunteered their time in preparing and serving food at the mission.
Cori Herrman, German teacher and advisor to the German Club, thinks these community service projects are a great way to teach the club members a life lesson.
Past community service projects include raising $2,400 for widows of September 11 victims and donating $1,000 to the Niles Fire Department to go toward the purchase of an infrared camera. "It helps students to realize that they can make a difference," said Schueneman.
