Niles woman dies after being hit by car

NILES -- A Niles woman was hit by a car and killed Wednesday night in Berrien Springs.
A press release from the Berrien Springs Police Department identified the woman as Marcia Smith, 46, of Niles.
Police said at about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, Vicki Thompson, 44, of Berrien Springs, was driving southbound on Old U.S. 31 near University Boulevard when she hit Smith, who police said was in the road.
Thompson was treated and released from Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph.
Smith was taken by Medic One to Lakeland St. Joseph and then transported by helicopter to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for head and leg injuries.
She died there at 6:09 a.m. this morning.
Police said the case remains under investigation.
