On Nov. 2, during halftime at the Detroit Lions football game, Buchanan's Jayme O'Bryant came in second place in the Punt, Pass &Kick State Finals with a score of 249 feet, just three feet away from the winner.
O'Bryant competed with the top five girls in the state in the 12-13 year-old age division. She was the only 12-year-old competing this year.
This was O'Bryant's fourth year in a row that she has qualified to compete for the state title. She is one year away from tying the record for most return visits to a State Championship competition (currently the record is five visits) and she has three more years to compete to break this record.
O'Bryant has won the State title twice, once in 2000 for the 8-9 year title and again in 2002 for the 10-11 year title. Her skills have ranked her in the top 10 nationally for the past several years out of over 200,000 girls that competed.
Her parents, John and Juli O'Bryant are extremely proud of their honor roll seventh grader that attends Buchanan Middle School and plays on the Southwest Michigan Fuzion softball team and the Buchanan Bucks traveling basketball team. She is anxiously awaiting Bucks volleyball to start soon. She is also the Manager for the Buchanan varsity softball team.
