Niles boys finish fifth in Big-16

The Niles boys cross country team finished fifth at the Big-16 Conference meet on Saturday.
Portage Northern won the boys' title with 77 points, followed closely by Kalamazoo Central's 78. Mattawan finished third with 99, Coldwater fourth with 110 and Niles fifth with 161.
The Niles girls finished 12th overall as Battle Creek Lakeview won the title with 49 points. Portage Northern finished second with 67 and St. Joseph took third with 110.
Elle Glueckert was the top Niles runner with a time of 22:33. Whitney Shearer came in at 24:13, Tami Madison at 24:48, Amanda Baxter at 24:51, Lindsey Leech at 25:22, Melissa Wuthnow at 25:55 and Amanda Smith at 27:11.
In the junior varsity race, Meghan Flynn finished at 26:47 for Niles and Sarah Barth came in at 32:46.
The Niles teams will return to action Saturday at the Division 2 Regional meet, hosted by Dowagiac at Southwestern Michigan College.
