NILES -- The Cassopolis driver of a vehicle which missed a curve and went off Steininger Road in Marcellus Township early Sunday was killed and his passenger injured.
Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. identified the victim killed in the single-vehicle crash between Finch Road and Loveridge Street as Keith Lowell Floyd, 45, of the 200 block of 1st Street, Cassopolis.
His passenger, Thaddeus Tremayne White, 25, of the 200 block of 2nd Street, Cassopolis, was taken to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac before being airlifted to Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo for further treatment of his injuries.
Underwood reported that a passing motorist found the vehicle off the road.
Floyd was killed when the vehicle struck a tree on the driver's side.
White was able to get out of the car.
Seatbelts did not appear to have been used by the occupants.
Alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash, the sheriff stated. Marcellus Fire and Ambulance Service were called to the scene to assist with the accident, which remains under investigation.
