Fishing Derby set for Sept. 20

CASSOPOLIS -- The first fishing derby for kids at Stone Lake will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The Cassopolis/Vandalia Chamber of Commerce Downtown Development Authority of Cassopolis is sponsoring the derby, which is being organized by Stone Lake Bait and Tackle.
Cash prizes of $25 for first, $15 for second and $10 for third, are being donated by Dr. John Hayman, Green Brothers and Marcello's Pizzeria.
There will be three categories of fish, with one prize each: bluegill, perch and bass.
Fish will be judged based on length.
To be eligible for prizes, you must register in advance between Tuesday, Sept. 16 and Friday, Sept. 19 at your school.
On Saturday, Sept. 20 check in to Stone Lake Bait and Tackle, across from the Pioneer Log Cabin, before fishing. You will be given a ticket eligible for door prizes, which will be drawn at noon.
During the derby, "live" fish will be measured. No frozen, dried out or fish caught prior to the derby will be allowed.
One prize per contestant. Judge's decision will be final.
Fish are to be caught from the shoreline only. Age groups include 5-8, 9-11 and 12-13. Contestants must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
Bait will be supplied, but you must bring your own pole and reel.
No one under 17-years-old needs a license.
