Division 2 track: Niles wins second title in three years

STURGIS — For the second time in three years, the Niles boys track team captured the Division 2 regional championship at Sturgis Friday night.

Led by Jordan Brown and Conner Amberg, the Vikings scored points in 12 out of the 17 events on their way to scoring 95.2 points and easily outdistancing runner-up Benton Harbor, which scored 71.2 points.

Edwardsburg finished 13th with 25.7 and Dowagiac finished 14th with 11 points.

Brown was a double winner for the Vikings as he captured the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.40 and was the lead-off on the champion 1,600-meter relay team, which was also made up of Ben Florkowski, Javon Ball and Devin Tomlinson. That unit posted a time of 3:33.69.

Amberg won the 200-meters with a time of 23.16, was second in the 100-meters and finished third as a member of the Niles 800-meter relay team.

Austin Brookins was also a champion as he captured the long jump with a leap of 20-9.5.

Dowagiac’s top finisher was DeOndray Henry, who finished fifth in the 400-meters with a time of 53.01.

The Edwardsburg girls team finished third overall, while Niles was 12th (18 points) and Dowagiac 13th (15).

The Eddies were regional champions in three out of the four relays.

Jocelyn Hack and Kaitlyn Zarycki were members of all three winning relay teams, while Abbi Nugent and Alexa Markell were double winners as members of the 800- and 400-meter relays.

Natalie Longo and Cameron Cleveland were the other members of the 1,600-meter relay.

Edwardsburg posted a 52.6 in the 400-meters, a 1:49.64 in the 800-meters and 4:16.51 in the 1,600-meters.

Niles’ top finishers were Vanya Ruppart in the discus (97-6) and Kaylee Thompson in the 1,600-meter run (5:43.45). Both finished third.

Dowagiac’s top finisher was Al’Dreonna Henderson, who was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.89.

 

Division 3

The Brandywine and Buchanan boys track teams were 14th and 15th respectively at the Division 3 regional meet held at Comstock.

Berrien Springs was the regional champion.

Brandywine’s top finisher was Bryce McClane, who was third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:40.31.

Adam Eger was seventh in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:45.98 for the Bucks’ top finish.

The Brandywine girls finished 13th and Buchanan 14th. Berrien Springs was the regional champion.

Brandywine’s top finisher was Zakiyyah Abdullah, who was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14-11.

Brenna Ropp was Buchanan’s top finisher as she was fifth in the 200-meters with a time of 28.16.
