1 dead following Bertrand Township crash

A driver has died after leaving the road and crashing into a tree in Bertrand Township Friday afternoon, according to a release from the Michigan State Police Department.

According to police, state troopers were dispatched to a reported traffic crash on Briar Road, a quarter mile east of Portage Road, at around 2:40 p.m. Upon arrival, police discovered a vehicle on fire that appeared to have struck a nearby tree after leaving the road while traveling westbound.

Crews with the Niles Charter and Bertrand township fire departments were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire.

The driver of the vehicle did not survive the crash. Authorities are working with the Berrien County Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the victim.
