Three Indiana teenagers who allegedly stole a car and then crashed it into a utility pole in Niles Township Tuesday — causing a power outage in the Fulkerson Park area — were arrested after police followed their footprints in the snow to the Niles Walmart.

The three suspects are Jesse James Roberson, 18, of Albion, Indiana; Shane Duane Jacobs, 18 of Elkhart; and Isaiah Ray Moutria, 18, of Elkhart.

They were lodged at the Berrien County Jail awaiting arraignment on a charge of receiving and concealing stolen property.

Roberson is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and not having a valid operator’s license.

The incident occurred shortly after 4 a.m. when Berrien County Sheriff’s Department deputies were dispatched to the 2100 block of South 3rd Street on a report of a vehicle that slid off the road and hit a utility pole.

The impact caused the pole to break and power lines to fall to the ground.

A witness told police they saw three people flee the scene on foot.

Due to the freshly fallen snow, sheriff’s deputies and officers with the Niles Police Department were able to follow the suspects’ footprints to the Niles Walmart where the suspects were arrested without incident.

The vehicle was recently reported as stolen out of the Elkhart area, according to the sheriff’s department.
