Before I retired, I was working about 70, 80 hours a week. I thought, ”what was I going to do?” Then I said, “The COA does a tremendous job helping people, and they are looking for help, so that would be a great place to work.” Cass County has the best COA anywhere. They do so many great things.

What kind of things do you do with the COA?

We help build [wheelchair] ramps for people who need ramps built…I also help with Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels is a great program because you go over there and deliver the meals to people who need it. Then you bring the stuff back and they [ the COA] feed you lunch and pay your mileage.

Is there anything else you do?

Both my wife and I are pen pals for fifth graders. It’s a great program over there. You write the kids letters and then they write you letters. Sometimes we get together and we meet our pen pal and have lunch together and play some games. It’s a great program for the fifth-graders in Cass and Dowagiac.

How many hours do you devote to your work there every week?

Depends on the week. Some weeks I do something everyday…I probably put in 30-40 hours a week.

What is the most rewarding thing you’ve learned during your time with the COA so far?

People are just so thankful. We have a lot of people in this county who are willing to help other people. We are very blessed. God has been good to people out here. I meet great people everywhere I go.

Do you or your wife do any other volunteer work in the community?

They have a special needs program at First United Methodist Church on the first Saturday of every month. We’re both involved with that.

What would say to encourage people to volunteer their time?

It’s very rewarding. You feel good about helping people who need help.
