“In retirement you can go off into the sunset and just enjoy the knowledge that you taught. Or, you can reinvest what you learned and what you experienced to the next generation,” Morris said. “That is what I prefer because I have a passion for teaching and for getting people to understand that you can reach any child.”

Today, Morris keeps her hand in education by working as a consultant at Ballard Elementary School in Niles, giving advice to new, prospective and experienced teachers alike.

Morris spent the bulk of her teaching career at Ballard, where she taught either third or fourth grade from 1987 to 2012.

“I loved being at Ballard because I am very comfortable here,” she said.

Morris also serves as a coordinator for student teachers for Western Michigan University and an adjunct professor.

If that was not enough to keep her busy, Morris also wrote a book about teaching that was published in August — just in time for the start of the school year in Michigan.

The book, “The Real World of the Classroom: A Practical Approach to Teaching,” gives teachers straightforward advice on how to navigate through the common challenges that even the most experienced teacher faces at the beginning of each school year.

The book, along with her consulting work and duties at WMU, are all examples of Morris’ philosophy that if you have the knowledge, you should pass it on.

After all, the now-veteran educator said she remembers how it felt to be a new teacher.

“It is an overwhelming responsibility for anyone, but when you are new there are so many new elements coming at you — and that’s for any new teacher,” she said. “I believe I have a lot of knowledge and experience I can still offer.”

Morris’ book is available at Amazon.com and other online retailers.
