What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library will offer the following free events and activities. A library card is not needed to participate in any program.

Niles Mayor Mike McCauslin votes for Niles Reads

The library learned that the mayor’s favorite book is “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Other favorites include “Freakonomics” and “Jonathon Livingston Seagull.”

The library wants to know the community’s favorites too.

The library has been collecting votes from library patrons and community members all summer and will publish the Top 100 Books lists in September.

People can also email their five favorite youth and adult books to marketing@nileslibrary.net or vote online at www.nileslibrary.com.

 

Monday, Aug. 10

• 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Super Bodies for Kids

• 2 to 5 p.m. — Gaming Underground

• 2 to 8 p.m. —Blood drive

Michigan Blood will be in the rotunda, ready for donors. For each person who gives blood, or attempts to give, Michigan Blood will donate $10 to Boy Scout Troup #579.

 

Tuesday, Aug. 11

• 10 to 11:30 a.m. — Special Edition: Movie Day showing “Home”

• 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)

The Connection is the fruition of grassroots efforts to implement the Housing Resource Network’s 10-year plan to end homelessness in Berrien County. Housed at the Mercy Center in Benton Harbor, this program of Emergency Shelter Services is a one stop shop for help when housing is threatened or just for referrals and information.

• 2 p.m. — Mighty Movies showing “Fantastic Four”

• 5:30 to 8 p.m. Offsite Making Change: Young Adult Edition, Part 3 at Neighbor to Neighbor, 9147 US-31, Berrien Springs

Guests will learn how to make sound financial choices, especially for high school and college seniors. Classes are free, dinner is provided, and the library will help with gas money. • 6:30 p.m. — Fiction for Foodies

Read, cook, eat potluck style, discuss. Sign up at the information desk to receive a copy of the book. The August book is “Blackberry Wine” by Joanne Harris.

• 6:30 p.m. — Pajama Storytime

 

Wednesday, Aug. 12

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months-3 years) at 10 and 11 a.m., Storytime (3-5 years) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 2 to 5 p.m. — Gaming Underground

 

Thursday, Aug. 13

• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

•1 to 5 p.m. Mahjong

Volunteers are available to teach newbies how to play. Other board games are also available.

• 4 p.m. — Teen Book Club (ages 13-19)

The group is currently reading “Evil Librarian” by Michelle Knudson.

• 4 p.m. — Tween Book Club (ages 8-12)

Reading “Five Kingdoms: Sky Raiders” by Brandon Mull

• 6 p.m. — Summer Parenting Classes: Section 504 Plans

Margo from the Michigan Alliance For Families will present on Section 504 plans. If you have a child who is struggling in school, and would like to learn tips and techniques to help them succeed, this is the class for you.

• 6:30 p.m. — Choose Your Own Adventure Thursdays: Vampires before “Dracula” The Origins and Transformation of a Monster

Professor Glenn S. Sunshine will be here to guide attendees through pre-Bram Stoker vampire legend.

 

Friday, Aug. 14

• 1 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

Bring your yarn or sewing project and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while you chat and work. All skill levels welcome.

• 2 to 5 p.m. — Gaming Underground

 

Saturday, Aug. 15

• 10:30 a.m. — Toddler Time: Dough Day

Toddler Time is a playgroup for children ages birth-3. This is a great opportunity for parent to parent interaction, as well as child to child interaction!

• 1 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

Bring yarn or a sewing project and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while chatting and working. All skill levels welcome.

• 1 to 6 p.m. — Dr. Who Day

Join the library for a day dedicated to the Doctor, his companions and their many adventures through time and space.

Throughout the day, the library will be screening different episodes of the Doctor’s adventures. There will also be fun stuff to do around the building like a Doctor Who themed scavenger hunt, a Doctor Who role playing game, a Tardis to take pictures with, and sheets to test your knowledge of Doctor Who characters.

There are three bigger events scheduled as such:

2-2:30 p.m. DIY Fez

3-4 p.m. Trivia Contest

4:30 p.m. Judging for costume contest
