Voters will have some important decisions to make regarding a couple of local proposals that will appear on the ballot during Tuesday’s special election.

Niles Township is asking voters to consider approving a special assessment that would go toward road maintenance while the Buchanan District Library is asking voters to consider approving an operating millage.

Below is a summary of both proposals:

Niles Township road fix proposal

In Niles Township, voters will decide whether or not to approve a special assessment that would generate approximately $430,000 a year for maintenance, repair and replacement of roads in Niles Township.

If the proposal passes, it would allow the township to collect up to $65 a year from each parcel of property in Niles Township for the next 10 years.

The township would be able to collect less than that amount if more funding becomes available from the state.

All money would stay in Niles Township and residents would have an opportunity to be involved in coming up with the plan for fixing the roads.

Buchanan Library millage

In Buchanan, voters will decided whether or not to approve a new tax levy that will generate about $91,000 a year for the Buchanan District Library.

If the proposal passes, the library will be able to collect up to .3 mill each year for 10 years from all properties within the district of the Buchanan District Library.

Library Director Barbara Wallace said the money would allow the library to extend its hours, hire new staff and upgrade its selection of books and online resources.

The tax levy would cost the average property owner about $20 a year based on a person whose home has a taxable value of $65,000, which equates to a real value of about $130,000.
