Spring sports team showing potential

Published 8:22 am Tuesday, April 21, 2015

There are only six weeks left in the spring sports season.

That means our area baseball, softball, tennis, golf, soccer and track teams are going to be extremely busy the next month and a half.

It hardly seems possible that there are only six weeks left because we just got started.

Thanks to the weather, many of the events scheduled in March were not held.

Then the teams took time off for spring break and now are faced with the fact that they will spend more time playing than they will practicing.

That is not necessarily a good thing because we have some very young sports teams. Those teams need live game action, but they also need time to figure out what improvements need to be made and the time at practice to work on those areas.

I have gotten to see quite a few teams over the last two weeks and it looks like there are several teams that are going to contend for championships.

While I am not here to make any predictions, I have got to believe that many of our teams will not only contend for league of division titles, but do very well in the state tournament when it gets under way in June.

I have also noticed that there are a lot of talented individuals who are going to make the spring sports season very special.

I always look forward to spring. After being cooped up in gyms around the area for three-plus months, I am ready to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Although this week may not qualify as beautiful, I did get the chance to enjoy Saturday watching a pair of tournaments in Dowagiac that featured several of our core schools participating in them.

I can tell you that the weather was perfect with sun and temperatures in the 70s.

I enjoyed watching Dowagiac and Cassopolis compete in the soccer tournament against Three Rivers as much as I enjoyed watching the host Chieftains and Niles compete against Paw Paw and Elkhart Memorial in softball.

None of our local teams captured the championships of those two tournament, but they were very competitive and showed me plenty of potential.

If you have not gotten out there yet to see any of our teams, I would encourage you to do so. I promise you will enjoy it.
