In an effort to cut expenses with the district, the Cassopolis Board of Education at its regular meeting approved an early retirement incentive plan at its regular meeting Monday night.

The plan, which passed 7-0, would offer those teachers who are eligible $10,000 and $50 for each accumulated sick day up to a maximum of $5,700 according to Superintendent Tracy Hertsel.

He said that approximately 20 teachers would be eligible for the plan.

“This is totally voluntary,” Hertsel told the board. “There is no pressure.”

Hertsel added that one employee taking the incentive package would help, but more would certainly aid the district as it continues to look at ways to save money.

When asked if there was a number that the district had it mind, Hertsel said there was not.

“If you put a number on it, then it becomes and all or nothing type thing and we did not get into that.”

The board also honored math-o-rama, spelling bee, science olympiad and FFA students for their recent competitions.

A reception was held prior to the meeting for those students.
