One dead after crash

A Cassopolis man died Wednesday afternoon after driving his vehicle into a tree while traveling in Mason Township, according to authorities with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

According to witnesses on the scene, Wayne Roscoe Owen, 72, was heading northbound on Cassopolis Road around 5:20 p.m.

According to the report, the drive drove off east side of the road into a farm field.  He swung his vehicle back onto the road momentarily before crossing into the oncoming lane, eventually colliding with a large tree of the west side of the road.

Roscoe was pronounced dead at the scene by
first responders.

According to the man’s family, Owen had a history of heart-related illness. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, and alcohol is not believed to have played a role.

Deputies with the  sheriff’s office were assisted by Edwardsburg Ambulance Service and the Porter Township Fire Department at the scene.

This incident remains under investigation.
