‘Pat Scramble’ to again honor Brandywine graduate

Niles resident Patrick Curran was 26 years old when he died from injuries sustained when a car hit the motorcycle he was riding in 2010.

Since then, a memorial fund established in his name has raised thousands of dollars for scholarships for area students.

Most of the money for the Pat Curran Memorial Fund is generated during an annual golf outing in Patrick’s name.

This year’s outing will take place June 20 at Juday Creek Golf Course in Granger.

Patrick’s father, Jim Curran, said they’ve raised an average of $3,000 each year.

“To see all the people who come out and support it is a really good feeling and means a lot,” Jim said. “Unless someone has gone through the experience of losing a child — it is something you never really get over. It’s been five years and sometimes it feels like it just happened yesterday.”

Patrick was a 2002 graduate of Brandywine High School who had a lot of friends in the Niles and Brandywine communities. He was active in school activities and participated in a number of sporting events.

The memorial fund has provided two $500 scholarships to Brandywine and Niles graduates who intend to continue their education. Scholarship recipients are selected by their interest in the areas of career, technical or vocational training.

The cost for playing in the golf outing is $65 a person.

Sponsors are recognized by a large banner that is hung at the registration table, starting point, turn, ending point, and then moved to the dinner location afterwards (unless requested to remain anonymous).

Sponsorship options are:

• Hole sponsor ($100) — Your name is displayed on the banner plus one golfer

• Event sponsor ($500) — Your name is displayed on the banner plus one team entry

Sponsor name and donations are due June 13.

A meal will take place at Jay’s Lounge after the golf outing. Prizes will be handed out and a raffle will be held during that time.

Jim Curan thanked the many sponsors and golfers who have helped make this event possible.
