Inspiration can come from anywhere.

For Niles author Cheri Hallwood it came from an unusual, but real-life source: a tree frog.

Hallwood said the tiny green amphibian loved to visit their flower garden and hang out on their front deck during the summer.

“We enjoyed watching this little tree frog and listening to her sweet trill in the evenings,” she said.

Hallwood’s granddaughters, Hannah and Aubrey Curl, had been asking for a new book and Hallwood was just waiting for the right idea when it finally hopped along.

“My imagination started going and I said ‘I think grandma would like to write a story about this,’” she said. “(Hannah) said that would be wonderful.”

From there, “Frogwilla, A Treefrog’s Story,” was born.

It is the first chapter book from Hallwood, who is the author of three picture books: “Winter’s First Snowflake,” “The Curious Polka-Dot Present,” and “One Wish for Winifred Witch.”

A story of hope, friendship, and courage, “Frogwilla, A Treefrog’s Story,” is a tale about a young treefrog and her quest to find her parents after a storm floods the banks of a great pond, separating her from her family and beloved home, Willow’s End.

The 128-page book is intended for children ages 7 through 12.

“I think children will enjoy learning some facts about tree frogs and the fact that Frogwilla has stamina, resilience and learns by trying over and over — she never gives up,” Hallwood said.

Hallwood’s granddaughters did not just provide inspiration for the book.

Hannah came up with the book’s title — Frogwilla was part of Hannah’s first email address — and Aubrey provided illustrations with the help of their grandfather, Harry.

Hannah said “Frogwilla, A Treefrog’s Tail,” is more than a story, it is a family affair.

“This is one project I will forever hold near and dear to my heart,” she said.

“Frogwilla” has received praise from critics since its release late last year.

It recently was named “Gold Recipient” of the Mom’s Choice Award in the juvenile Chapter Book category. Recipients of the Mom’s Choice Awards are chosen for being the best in family-friendly media, products and services.

“I am thrilled to earn the Mom’s Choice Award,” said Hallwood. “Having had the honor of receiving their award for my picture books, I know all the great things the MCA does to connect consumers, educators, and caregivers with their best products and services.”

Hallwood’s books are available on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Notre Dame Hammes Bookstore and Forever Young Publishers.
