Students will be going to school longer this year as local school districts make up days lost to weather-related cancelations.

The Brandywine, Buchanan and Niles school districts have added days to the end of the calendar year in order to satisfy state regulations for how many days students need to be in school.

The state allows a total of six snow days, but all three districts had to cancel school eight times due to winter weather.

Supt. John Jarpe said Brandywine has elected to add two days on Monday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 9. They will be half days for all students grades kindergarten through 12 and final exam days for students in grades 7-12.

Supt. Andrea van der Laan said Buchanan has made the following changes to its school calendar:

• June 3 — full day

• June 4 — full day

• June 5 — half day

• June 8 — half day

• June 9 — half day

Van der Laan wrote on the school website that it is extremely important for students to be in attendance on those days because they are completing end-of-year assessments and marking report cards. Also, she said school funding is based on whether or not the school has at least 75 percent of student in session on any given day.

“Please make sure your child is in attendance,” she wrote.

Supt. Michael Lindley said Niles has added two full days to the end of its school year. There will be a full day June 8 and June 9. June 10 will be the last day for teachers and will be a half-day of work and a half-day of professional development.
