An investigation by police found no evidence of a weapon being on the grounds of Ring Lardner Middle School in Niles after a student reported that he had seen one in a locker last week.

“No weapon was found during the police investigation and the police found no evidence to substantiate the claim,” said Ring Lardner Principal Doug Langmeyer in a statement released Friday afternoon.

The investigation began on Thursday after a student reported that he had seen weapon in a locker at Ring Lardner School on Wednesday.

The mother of that student said her son was shown a small handgun by a classmate, who had the gun in his locker.

The student’s mother said she “100 percent” believes her son was telling the truth about seeing the gun.

Langmeyer said that upon receiving the report Thursday, the school immediately notified the Niles Police Department and a thorough investigation, including a search of the building, was conducted.

That investigation did not find any evidence of a weapon being on school grounds Wednesday.

“The safety and well being of our students is our primary concern. For that reason, we enforce a strict policy prohibiting any weapons on school grounds,” Langmeyer said. “Additionally, to promote school safety, we hold a variety of educational activities — both for students and staff — throughout the school year.”
