Berrien County Commissioner Bob Wooley pleaded guilty Friday to embezzling money from the North Berrien Senior Center and attempting to embezzle money from the North Berrien Fire and Rescue Board, according to the county prosecutor’s office.

Jennifer Smith, chief assistant prosecutor, said Wooley pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement over $100,000 and one count of attempted embezzlement over $20,000, but less than $50,000 in Berrien County Trial Court in St. Joseph.

Wooley was charged with embezzlement in December after a Michigan State Police investigation revealed that he had taken more than $150,000 from the North Berrien Senior Center from 2007 to 2014. Wooley was the senior center’s director during the time of the offense.

Smith said the attempted embezzlement charge stems from a separate investigation that found Wooley had also been taking money from North Berrien Fire and Rescue Board.

Wooley is scheduled to be sentenced April 20 in St. Joseph. He is facing a maximum of 20 years in prison on the embezzlement charge.

Commissioner Jim Curran said a special meeting of the commissioners has been set for 3 p.m. Monday to discuss replacing Wooley, who cannot remain in his position because he pleaded guilty to a felony.

Curran said they would have to appoint a replacement within 30 days. Wooley had served as a commissioner for 16 years.
