Cassopolis only played one half of basketball in the opening game of the Class C District Tournament Monday night.

And that was all they had to because its opponent, Benton Harbor Dream Academy decided to forfeit following halftime.

The final score will read 35-0, but there was a bitter taste in the mouths of everyone involved.

“I have never been a part of anything like this,” Cassopolis Athletic Director Matt Brawley said.

“This is not good,” Ranger coach Nat Pittman said.

Although everyone knew the game was over after Cassopolis took a 24-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Rangers needed to play in preparation for their meeting with No. 2-ranked Brandywine in the district semifinals Wednesday at Eau Claire High School.

It did not take long to see in the second quarter that Dream Academy may not finish the game as it only had five players to begin with and a couple of times players started to walk off the floor before being told to continue to play.

The Toros coaching staff pleaded with the players to finish the game during the entire 10-minute halftime break.

Unfortunately for all involved, as the clock wound down, decision was made that the game would not continue.

Besides not scoring a basket in the contest, the Toros were 0-2 from the free throw line.

Brittney Prestly scored eight points to lead Cassopolis in the shortened game. Kaylynn Forrest and Kortenei Suggs each finished with seven points.
