A pedestrian walking on M-51 was struck and killed by a vehicle late Thursday evening in Pokagon Township.

Joshua Yahne, 22, of Dowagiac, died as a result of the accident, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

The vehicle that hit Yahne was driven by 21-year-old Jamika Morgan, of Elkhart, Indiana. Morgan had two small children in the vehicle at the time.

The accident occurred on M-51 at Edwards Street in Cass County around 11:26 p.m.

Police determined that Yahne was walking south on M-51 when he was hit by Morgan’s vehicle.

After striking Yahne, the vehicle left the road, hit a utility pole and rolled over an unknown number of times.

The young passengers, whose names are being withheld, were transported to a Dowagiac hospital where they were treated and released. Morgan was hospitalized for her injuries.

Cass County Sheriff’s Department deputies were assisted at the scene by the Pokagon Fire Department, Indian Lake Fire Department, Dowagiac Fire Department, Pride Care Ambulance and Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service.

The crash remains under investigation.
