Niles crushes field at SMAC Individual Tournament

PORTAGE — The Niles wrestling team will roll into the post season with a full head of steam.

The No. 3-ranked Vikings overpowered the field at the SMAC Individual Tournament Saturday at Portage Northern.

Niles placed 13 out of 14 in the finals and came away with seven individual champions in amassing 307 points.

Battle Creek Lakeview finished second with 214.5 points and Lakeshore was third with 155 points.

It was the second straight title for Niles, which faces Lakeshore in the opening round of the MHSAA Team Districts on Thursday.

Noah Hall (31-3) was a repeat champion for the Vikings as he captured the 145-pound title.

Also winning championships were Josh Dayhuff (31-4) at 119; Warren Smith (31-6) at 130; Quintin Smith (23-6) at 152; Sean Craig (28-6) at 171; Ted Jankowiak (29-8) at 215; and Alex Bata (27-6).

Finishing second for Niles were Andrew Flick (103), Brenden Hall (125), Mitchell Findeisen (135), Courtland Lamberton (140), Fred Kemp (160) and Cody Thornton (189).

Cade Stephenson was fourth at 112.
